Three days on a working visit to Gorontalo Province, made Secretary General of UNESCO's Global Geopark Network, Guy Martini, has many references to Gorontalo Geopark. Even though the final recommendation has yet to be reached, according to him, some things need to be considered.
He considered that the provincial government's proposal had to be focused on one fundamental theme. Earth parks with historical, natural, and cultural uniqueness must stand out and differ from other areas.
“I apologize because I still need further information about things that must be analyzed so that suggestions can come out. I will summarize all the results of the visit here on Wednesday's meeting, most importantly, what theme is taken at the Gorontalo Geopark," Martini said while holding a meeting with Budiyanto Sidiki and members of the Bone Bolango regional government in Lombongo Sunday (9/7/2023).
The man from France appreciated the efforts made by all stakeholders, starting from the local government, academics, and residents, who he considered to be united. He also heard political support directly from Acting Gorontalo Governor Ismail Pakaya and Chairman of the Regional People's Representative Council, Paris R.A Yusuf.
"If you want fast results, immediately form a coordinating team that takes care of this, the institutional team is prepared. This team will also function as a liaison between stakeholders and the community," he asked.
In the same place, Budiyanto Sidiki said that establishing the Gorontalo Geopark institution required a significant effort. The provincial government envisions that the Gorontalo Geopark will be located in three areas: Bone Bolango, Gorontalo Regency, Boalemo Regency, and Gorontalo City.
"Geopark institutions cover three districts, so this is not an easy thing to coordinate. We are looking for the format of a geopark managing geological agency that has flexibility but has strong support. We are still looking for the appropriate institutional format regulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs," explained the former Head Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning.
Budi hopes the Gorontalo Geopark institution can be carried out step by step. It is done by inviting the regional secretaries of districts/cities while communicating what and how Geoparks are and their impact on the community.
