GORONTALO DISTRICT, Kominfotik – Gorontalo Regent Nelson Pomalingo supports Lake Limboto to become a National Geopark. He hoped that the Secretary General of the Global Geopark Network (GGN), Guy Martini, and the team from the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning could make that wish come true.

Nelson assessed that Lake Limboto deserves to be designated as a geopark because it is a livelihood place for hundreds of thousands of residents. About 95 percent of the lake area belongs to Gorontalo Regency, while the rest is in Gorontalo City.

"The struggle for Lake Limboto as a geopark has existed since 2019. We have done several things. First, we have conducted research in collaboration with UNG and several universities. Second, we have conducted a seminar on this," said Nelson when receiving GGN Secretary General Guy Martini and the team at the Pentadio Resort Tuesday (11/7/2023).

Nelson assesses that the collaboration with the provincial government to realize the plan has been going well so far. The regency government is also ready with the funding needed to discover the Limboto Lake Geopark.

"We also routinely hold the Limboto Lake Festival every year. This festival becomes the National Event Calendar with financial support from the central government," he added.

Apart from the Limboto Lake, the Regency Government and the Provincial Government have proposed some geosites to be designated as Geoparks. One is the Pentadio Resort geothermal, which is still in the same area as Lake Limboto.

Tohupo Wood Fossils are also in Bongomeme District, Huidu limestones, and several other important sites.
